  • bullet The use of smart media is rapidly growing in Korea. Nationwide adoption rates to smartphones among families is 79.7%, according to a national status survey of Internet use. As such, smart media-based Internet addiction is growing faster than PC-based Internet addiction. A 2012 survey research by National Information Society Agency(NIA) finds that an 18.4% of smartphone teen users was addicted to smartphones, while a 10.7% of internet teen users was addicted to internet. This finding calls for pro-active measures to fight the smart media addiction.
  • bullet Teens are more prone to smartphone addiction during their winter vacation (it starts on Dec 20 and ends on Jan. 31) Considering this, it developed and has distributed the guidebook for students to prevent smart media addiction. Designed to adapt content to each group of target readers, the guidebooks have been distributed nationwide to (8,678) kindergartens, (6,191) primary schools and (3,206) middle schools and (2,303) high schools.

  • bullet Designed as a 4-week course, the guidebook consists of four weekly sections of strategy/guides to preventing smart media addiction. The first week guide is designed to motivate readers to control and plan their use of smart media; The second week guide is to help them put their control plan into action and self-assessment & feedback; The third week guide is designed to help them make a habit of controlling their smart media use; and the fourth week guide consists of self-assessment and maintaining a sound habit.
  • bullet If readers use this guidebook well, they will be able to prevent smart media addiction and acquire a healthy habit of using smart media. Parental guidance is necessary for kindergarteners and first- and second-grader students in the primary school to read this guide book. Other students can read it by themselves.
