타이틀아이콘 Greetings from Director

As the Internet has rapidly grown since 1990s, it has made our lives more convenient and created new cultural trends. However, from a certain point in time, we have experiences the negative aspects of the Internet as we misuse it; Internet addiction is a good example.

Most internet addicts tend to have withdrawal and tolerance symptoms. They cannot perform their work w

ell and also cause some family issues. In addition, they tend to become violent toward their family and even anonymous people because it is hard for them to control their anger and impulsiveness. In a worst-case scenario, their violence can cause someone's death. There have been cases that they died from a heart attack or brain hemorrhage.

The National Information Society Agency (NIA) established the Korea Internet Addiction Center in 2002 in order to promote the proper use of the Internet and smartphones as well as to help those who are having a hard time controlling themselves regarding the use of media.

Since the foundation in 2002, the center has conducted such projects like free counseling services, Internet addiction prevention campaigns and surveys on actual status of Internet addiction. It also has produced over 2,300 professional counselors and counseling teachers and developed the Korean diagnostic criteria for internet addiction (K-criteria). In addition, it has supplied its own counseling program that covers from children to adults to counseling institutes nationwide.

My beloved visitors! The Korea Internet Addiction Center under the NIA has supported and operated cultural information centers (branches of the Korea Internet Addiction Center) in the areas in Busan and Jeonju in Jeollabuk-do (North Jeolla Province) founded by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security and its 11 branches in other areas including Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Gangwon, and Jeju.

In addition, it has also supported the education of counselors and project expenses through concluding agreements with youth counseling centers, family support centers, mental health centers, and social welfare centers regarding the solution to media addiction including the Internet and smartphones. As the Korea Internet Addiction Center under the NIA has played its role as a hub of the nation to solve the Internet addiction problems, its contributions have been recognized as an excellent example of the national policies. Some world's media such as PBS, NHK, BBC, Der Spiegel, and the New York Times have paid attentions to the center.

The Korea Internet Addiction Center under the NIA is a central government agency for solving the Internet addiction issues founded under Article 14 of the Framework Act on National Informatization.

It will lead a warm-hearted digital world by wisely operating the center and becoming an example of the world in founding various policies on the information infrastructures and solutions to the Internet addiction.
